Last night a local target had a sale for UCLA students from 11pm to 2 am. Yeah, that's right - 11 pm to 2 am NOT 11am to 2pm. They ran shuttle buses and THEY WERE PACKED! My middle aged reaction is ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Who wants to go to Target at midnight??? I have to work up to it on a Saturday afternoon.
Anyway, three of our first year students wanted to go - with the expectation that they would be back by midnight. Because the buses were so packed they were delayed - leaving the RA on duty pulling her hair out and wanting to go to sleep. They finally made it back after 1:00 am.
These are the things that can drive us crazy, AND they are the things that can define the college experience for students.

Bruin Cards
Helping the students get their Bruin card is always a highlight of the orientation. Below are some pictures from today.

Move in 2011
Whew! Our group of 23 incoming first-year students moved in today. The move-in process is always an exciting process - some students ready to push their folks out the door before they unpack, others weepy before they even set down the first box. Wherever they are today, guaranteed in a few days they will hit their stride and in a few weeks be wondering what all the fuss was about.
This year our incoming group is larger because of the addition of the Generation NeXt program that we have developed in collaboration with the SWSELPA and LACOE and funding under the Transition Program for Students with Intellectual Disabilities (TPSID) demonstration grant from the US Department of Education.
All in all - a tiring, emotional day, but the start of another magical year.
